Big Story Weather from February 21: A major winter storm moved through the Central Plains dumping over one foot of snow for many places in Kansas and Missouri along with parts of Nebraska. This storm then moved into Iowa and the Northern Plains. Some severe weather developed over Eastern Texas, Northern Louisiana and Central Mississippi with a few tornadoes and wind damage reported. The remainder of the country enjoyed a nice day, except for the Northwest where showers overtook the day.
Weather Outlook for February 22: The strong storm system will be moving into the Great Lakes today continuing to provide heavy snow for many places like Chicago and Detroit. The cold front will provide a rain and snow mix for the Mid-Atlantic region. Further south, showers and thunderstorms will re-develop over the Southeast and Gulf Coast today. High pressure over the Rockies will bring a nice day to most of the region. The Northwest will be dealing with some light showers again today. Below is the weather for a few select cities.
Baltimore MD: Cloudy with periods of Rain/Sleet and a high near: 37F
Gulfport MS: Mostly Cloudy with Showers and Thunderstorms by this afternoon and a high near: 71F
Chicago IL: Cloudy with periods of snow and a high near: 30F
Denver CO: Partly Cloudy with a high near: 34F
Portland OR: Cloudy with Showers and a high near: 44F
International Weather Outlook for February 22: High pressure over Eastern China will bring partly cloudy skies to the region and this will expand into the Koreas and also Japan. The monsoonal trough will mostly remain south of land over the open waters, however a few showers may make their way into India. A strong frontal boundary will move through the Middle East today bringing a few showers and also the potential for dust storms. Another low pressure area is moving into Western Europe and England bringing with it showers and higher elevation snows to the region. Low pressure moving towards the tip of South America will bring showers to the region. Multiple areas of low pressure moving north of Australia will bring showers to the area. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Shanghai China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 5C
Guam USA: Partly Cloudy with a low near 22C
Bangkok Thailand: Partly Cloudy with a low near 25C
London England: Mostly Cloudy with periods of rain and a low near 4C
Townsville Australia: Cloudy with Showers and a low near 21C
February 22, 2013 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving through the Middle East will bring some showers and a high potential of dust storms to the region. Another area of low pressure is now moving towards Western Europe and will bring showers and higher elevation snows to the area. A third area of low pressure is moving towards Iceland and will bring high winds/seas to the area. Another low pressure is moving to the Great Lakes and will bring heavy snows along with mixed precipitation and even thunderstorms to the Eastern US.
Eastern Pacific: Low pressure moving towards the West coast of Canada will bring showers and higher elevation snows to the region, while another low pressure area is moving through the Central Gulf of Alaska this morning. A third weaker area of low pressure is just to the east of Hawaii increasing the winds and seas in the area.
Western Pacific: Tropical Depression 2W continues to move towards Southeast Asia with winds around 15kts and a pressure of 1010mb. This storm will weaken as it moves closer to land. Another area of low pressure is moving through Northeast Russia bringing snow to the region.
Indian Ocean: Tropical Cyclone Haruna is currently moving over Madagascar bringing very strong winds and heavy rainfall to the region. Winds are currently around 85kts and a pressure of 959mb. Another area of low pressure is moving along the monsoonal trough towards India.
Southern Hemisphere: Low pressure is moving away from Fiji today bringing improving conditions to the region, while another low is moving towards the Southeast of Africa and beginning to interact with the tropical cyclone. Multiple areas of low pressure are moving through Northern Australia today bringing showers to the north and some thunderstorms.
Five-Day Storm Index Outlook for February 22-26:
Baltimore MD: Today and tomorrow look for rain and sleet to mix together creating a slight impact on the region. The 26th will provide more showers to the area slight impacts.
Gulfport MS: A few showers and thunderstorms for the next couple of days will keep the area in a slight impact and then again more showers and thunderstorms move back in on the 25th bringing another slight impact to the region.
Chicago IL: Snow in the region today will create a slight impact, followed by another slight impact on the 26th with a few more snow showers in the area.
Denver CO: A few snow showers on the 23rd and 25th will bring a slight impact to the region both days.
Portland OR: The next five days will have showers impacting the area keeping the region in a slight impact for the entire forecast period.
Climate Watch for February 17-February 21:
Baltimore MD: The past five days temps have been around 1-13 degrees below normal.
Gulfport MS: The period started with temps around 2-11 degrees below normal and then briefly warmed to around 1 degree above before falling back to around 2-11 degrees below normal.
Chicago IL: The 17th saw temps around 6 below normal, followed by a very warm 18th with temps about 16 degrees above normal and then finished the period with temps around 5-13 degrees below normal.
Denver CO: The 17th saw temps about 17 degrees above normal, followed by a cool down with temps running around 1-24 degrees below normal for the remainder of the period.
Portland OR: The period started with temps about 4-6 degrees below normal and then on the 19th temps rose to around 3 above normal before falling back to around 3-6 below normal for the remainder of the period.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for February 22, 2013:
Day 1-3: The big story for today will be the storm system moving into the Great Lakes bringing moderate snowfall to the region and also mixed precipitation moving into the Mid-Atlantic. Showers and thunderstorms will also be found over the Southeast and Gulf Coast. High pressure over the Rockies will bring nice weather to the region and this will expand into the Northern Plains, while another frontal boundary approaches the Pacific Northwest. During the middle of the period the storm system will push into the Northeast setting the stage for some heavier snowfall and another low will push into the Plains region. The final day of the period will have the snow storm in the Central Plains along with a stationary boundary over the Gulf Coast region bringing showers and thunderstorms. High pressure will be over the Rockies, while another low moves towards the Pacific Northwest.
Day 4-7: The period starts with a major snow storm over the Great Lakes extending into the Northeast, while the cold front will bring showers to the Southeast and Gulf Coast region. High pressure will build in over the Rockies. The period will end with the storm system exiting the northeast and then a strong cold high pressure center will take hold of most of the country bringing colder weather.
Day 8-12: The period will start with a few lake enhanced snow showers, while high pressure dominates a good portion of the United States with colder and drier weather. The middle of the period will still have a few wrap around snow showers moving out of the Lakes region, while the strong high pressure center finally pushes into Texas. A weak upper level feature may bring some snow showers to the Southeast and portions of the Gulf during this time period. The period will end with the low pressure off the Northeast still bringing in wrap-around moisture off the lakes and also the strong high pressure center still over the Plains region. A low pressure area will finally push into the Northwest again bringing showers and mountain snows to the region.
Day 13-15: The period will start with more snow showers still over the Northeast and Great Lakes region, while the strong high pressure area sits over the Ohio River Valley. A powerful storm system will begin to push into the Pacific Northwest during this time. The period will end with a major storm system in the Northern Plains which will bring a possible “Severe Weather Outbreak” along with Blizzard Conditions to a good part of the Central Plains and Gulf Coast.

Friday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of light snow and a high near 23F, winds from the Northeast 2-7mph as overnight lows fall to around 8F. Total snowfall accumulations of one inch possible.
Saturday: Partly Cloudy and warmer with a high near 25F, winds from the Southeast 2-7mph as overnight lows fall to around 12F.
Sunday: Partly Cloudy and nice with a high near 27F, winds from the Southeast 2-7mph as overnight lows fall to around 19F.
Monday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of light snow, winds from the Northwest 7-12mph as high temps rise to around 29F, with overnight lows falling to around 20F. Total snowfall accumulations of one inch possible.
Tuesday: Partly Cloudy and very nice with a high temp near 28F, winds from the Northwest 8-13mph as overnight lows fall to around 19F.

Wave Energy: The largest areas of concern for wave energy today will be in the Western Gulf along the stationary boundary and also over the Pacific Northwest.
Solar Energy: The best places to generate solar energy today will be over most of Southern Florida and also over the Southwest and back up into the Rockies and Northern Plains.
Wind Energy: The Mississippi River Valley behind the cold front will be the best place for wind energy today.
Hydro-Energy: The Great Lakes southward into the Ohio River Valley and back into the Mississippi River Valley will be the area of most rainfall and snowfall creating both short- and long-term energy. Another region over the Pacific Northwest will have coastal rains for short-term energy and mountain snows for long-term energy.
