Big Story Weather from February 25: The winter storm in the Central and Southern Plains is the big story of the last 24 hours. There were reports in Amarillo Texas of 17 inches of snow and it’s still snowing out there. There was a smaller scale severe weather outbreak that did impact the Gulf Coast again yesterday with plenty of rain as some places along the Mississippi Gulf Coast saw over 5 inches, and in Florida they even had hail and a tornado reported. The Southeast portion of Louisiana also dealt with more rain and hail again last night.
Weather Outlook for February 26: Low pressure finally moving into the Great Lakes region will bring snow and wintry conditions to the region. Showers will develop along the Eastern Seaboard with a few areas of thunderstorms for the Southeast and Northern Florida. High pressure over the Rockies will begin to bring the cold weather southward that will fill in over the Southern Plains and the Gulf Coast. A few showers will be found along the Pacific Northwest and higher elevation snows. Below is the weather for a few select cities.
Buffalo NY: Cloudy with light snow and a high near: 40F
New Orleans LA: Partly Cloudy with a high near: 62F
Kansas City MO: Cloudy with periods of snow by this evening and a high near: 36F
Billings MT: Partly Cloudy with a high near: 45F
Seattle WA: Cloudy with Showers and a high near: 46F
International Weather Outlook for February 26: High pressure to the east of Japan will bring partly to mostly cloudy skies to the region from Japan westward into the Koreas and also parts of Eastern China. A strong area of low pressure will be moving through Northern Russia bringing with it plenty of snowfall. Low pressure moving towards Italy will bring showers to the region, while high pressure over Western Europe will make for a nice day from Spain to England. An area of low pressure will be moving through the tip of South America bringing moderate rains and thunderstorms to the region. Tropical Cyclone Rusty is bringing very heavy rains and strong winds to Northwest Australia, while Northern Australia is dealing with multiple areas of low pressure making it very warm and stormy through the region. Southern Australia will be dealing with mostly cloudy skies. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Seoul South Korea: Partly Cloudy with a low near 1C
Hong Kong China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 10C
Malaysia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 24C
Madrid Spain: Partly Cloudy with a low near 5C
Sydney Australia: Mostly Cloudy and warm with a low near 20C
February 26, 2013 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving over Eastern Europe will bring showers and snow showers to the region. Another area of low pressure is now pushing across the Central Atlantic towards Europe. Low pressure is moving up the East Coast of the United States along with the powerful storm moving into the Great Lakes region.
Eastern Pacific: Low pressure moving onshore over Canada will bring showers and higher elevation snows to the region. Another stronger low is moving into the Gulf of Alaska bringing moderate winds and snows to the region.
Western Pacific: Low pressure pushing well east of Japan is making its way towards the dateline and will bring moderate winds and rain to Wake Island. Low pressure over Central Russia will begin to push towards the Koreas over the next 24 hours.
Indian Ocean: An area of low pressure located to the Northwest of India will bring some showers to the local area. The remains of Haruna continue to move through the Southern Indian Ocean bringing no impacts to land.
Southern Hemisphere: Low pressure moving towards Western South America will bring a few showers and thunderstorms to the southern tip, while another low pressure area to the east of South America will also bring showers and thunderstorms to the eastern side of the country. Two low pressure areas are traveling the open waters of the south with no impacts to land forecasted. Tropical Cyclone Rusty is making landfall in Northwest Australia with winds around 65kts and an estimated pressure of 974mb. Tropical Cyclone 18 is located to the west of Rusty and moving slowly eastward with winds around 35kts and pressure estimated around 996mb.
Five-Day Storm Index Outlook for February 26-March 2:
Buffalo NY: Impacts will be felt the entire week from lake effect snows with moderate impacts on the 27th.
New Orleans LA: No forecasted impacts for the week as high pressure begins to take control of the weather.
Kansas City MO: There will be slight impacts today and tomorrow. After that conditions improve and will remain impact free for the remainder of the period.
Billings MT: Light snow today moving through the area will create slight impacts for the region. After that high pressure will build in and the remainder of the period will be impact free.
Seattle WA: Rain showers are forecasted for the majority of the next five days leaving the region with slight impacts.
Climate Watch for February 21-February 25:
Buffalo NY: The period started with temps over 10 degrees below normal, followed by a return to normal on the 22nd and then a slight warm up for the 23rd before falling back below normal on the 24th and then finishing the period about 5 degrees above normal.
New Orleans LA: The period started with temps about 2-5 degrees above normal and then cooled down to below normal with temps around 2-5 below normal.
Kansas City MO: Very cold start to the period with temps over 10 degrees below normal and remaining below normal for the entire period.
Billings MT: The period started with temps around 2-4 degrees below normal and then finished the period with temps about 1 degree above normal.
Seattle WA: The entire period saw temps anywhere from 1-5 degrees below normal.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for February 26, 2013:
Day 1-3: The big snow storm will push into the Great Lakes region today bringing with it plenty of snow to places like Chicago. Wrap-around moisture will be found in parts of the Northern Plains. The rain will push into the East Coast, while the Severe Weather will be limited to the Southeast and Northern Florida for today. Strong high pressure will build in over the Rockies bringing the start to some colder weather. Low pressure will impact the Northeast by the middle of the period with rain and snow for many places, while the very strong and cold high pressure area starts to build in over the Plains and will bring a blast of colder air to the Southeast and Gulf Coast as well.
Day 4-7: The period will start with a large area of high pressure dominating the majority of the country with partly cloudy skies and colder weather for the East. There will be a few snow showers throughout the Great Lakes and parts of the East. The middle of this period will have another clipper system moving across the Northern Plains bringing some light snow to the region. The period will end with a significant low over the Northern Plains and another low trying to develop over the Southern Plains. Strong high pressure will hold on over the East.
Day 8-12: The period will start with a weak low moving through the Great Lakes and extending into the Gulf Coast, while another shot of cold air builds in behind it over the Rockies and Plains region. A frontal boundary will begin to impact the West Coast as well. By day nine we will have a storm system moving up the East Coast, while a big strong area of high pressure is over the Central part of the United States and another low pressure will be moving into the Pacific Northwest. The period will finish with another clipper system moving through the Northern Plains and Great Lakes, while a new storm system begins to develop over the Southwest.
Day 13-15: The period will start with high pressure on both the West and East Coasts, while a significant storm takes shape over Southern Texas, bringing with it some heavy snows to the Southern Plains again. The middle of this period we will be looking at a major winter storm moving up the East Coast, this could be the one the entire East Coast has been waiting for. The cold air will again plunge southward into the Gulf Coast and Southeast and there may be some moisture left in this region that we could be dealing with winter precipitation in the region. The period will end with another storm system moving into the Northern Plains.

Tuesday: Mostly Cloudy with areas of light snow, winds from the Northwest 2-7mph as high temps rise to around 32F and overnight lows fall to around 15F.
Wednesday: Partly Cloudy and cooler with a high near 30F, winds from the Northwest 10-20mph as overnight lows fall to around 17F.
Thursday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 29F, winds from the Northeast 8-12mph as overnight lows fall to around 16F.
Friday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of snow, high temps will be around 25F, with the winds from the Northwest 7-12mph as overnight lows fall to around 9F.
Saturday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 26F, winds from the Northwest 8-13mph as overnight lows fall to around 14F.

Question: Where does most of the Severe Weather occur in regards to the surface low pressure?
Answer: I love severe weather and enjoy sharing the news about it to help keep people safe. The majority of severe weather that occurs with surface low pressure happens in two places. The first is embedded ahead of a warm front and the second, more pronounced area is about 150 miles ahead of the cold front in the squall line. These two spots make up for the majority of severe weather, however a third spot is right before the cold front passes. This spot is more for straight line winds.

Wave Energy: The best place for wave energy today will be along the Pacific Northwest and also into the Northern Gulf Coast region with the strong winds behind the front.
Solar Energy: Today the best place for solar energy will be the Northern Plains extending into the Rockies and the Southwest and also the Southern part of Florida.
Wind Energy: The biggest wind energy places today will be across the Mississippi River Valley from North to South behind the cold front as some places could see winds in the 20-30mph range.
Hydro-Energy: The entire Great Lakes region and expanding into parts of the Northeast will see a good amount of long-term and short-term hydro energy from the rain and snow today. Also into the Southeast they will see a good increase in short-term hydro energy. The Pacific Northwest will have a mix of both short-term and long-term hydro energy.

Dining: Today will be a nice day to get out and enjoy lunch at the park or any outdoor dining venue.
Transportation: No issues impacting travel today.
Shopping: Today will be a nice day for all the shoppers to get out and enjoy the malls without having to carry an umbrella.
Electricity: Today the region will get warm enough that we will see the need for 9.5CDD’s later in the afternoon as high temps hit 81F.
Yard Work: The warm weather for today will make an excellent day to get the flowers put into the flower pots and set outside to enjoy some much needed sunshine as today’s GDD’s will be around 24.5.
Construction: No issues with construction today as the sun will be a nice addition to work today.
Outdoor Venues: Today will be an excellent day for vacationers to get out and enjoy Walt Disney World with the high temps in the 80’s it will just feel nice.
