Bump Mobile App Adds Phone-to-computer File Transfers

Bump, whose mobile apps lets users share data by tapping their phones together, announced on Thursday a new version of its Web client that lets users move files from phones to computers, and vice versa.
The updated client is universally compatible with Bump on iOS and Android, meaning everything a user can bump between phones – photos, videos, contacts and other files – can now be shared with any computer in the world.
“You can share videos, PDFs, Powerpoint (files), whatever you have on your device, you can now really simply move between devices by just tapping them together,” wrote the Bump team in a blog post on Thursday.
Bump co-founders Dave Lieb, Andy Huibers and Jake Mintz launched the file-sharing project in 2009. Since then, more than 125 million have since downloaded the app.
The company launched the initial version of its Web client last May, and enhanced the product late last year to allow photo sharing between a phone and computer. The feature became quite popular, boosting the number of daily users 50 percent in the last two months alone, Bump said.
The current upgrade brings all the smartphone sharing capabilities to computers. When a user wants to “bump” a file, they simply visit the Bump website on their computer and open Bump on their phone. Tapping the computer’s space bar key initiates the file transfer, and data is transferred to and from the cloud over cellular or wireless networks.
“There’s other solutions that may be technically faster or have fewer steps or are more ubiquitous,” said Lieb, Bump’s chief executive, in an interview with USAToday.
“But what we find is people prefer Bump because it is cognitively simpler. It resonates with people.”
