Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will soon get a bump to the National level as the apex governing body, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has begun the process.
MNP has been prevalent for quite some time in India. It basically allows one to keep one’s number & still change the service provider. Though this landmark & fundamental freedom drew wide-spread attention in the beginning, it seemed to lose steam down the road for some reasons. However, MNP is a very basic requirement & can be considered as a great leveler. Needless to say, it is also an indirect threat to the telecom companies to treat their customers well. If they fail to satisfy, the customer now has a choice to keep the number & still opt for a supposedly better service provider.
At present, a user can ‘Port’ his number within his own circle. In other words, India is divided into 22 circles as far as Telecom companies are concerned. The number when procured from a particular circle is operating under its ‘Home Network’ & roaming applies if one leaves that circle. Once Pan-India MNP is deployed, subscribers can port a number from any circle to any circle or even from different states.
Why this additional privilege? The answer lies in the way our Telecom ecosystem is about to be altered. Soon, TRAI’s ‘Unified License’ Framework will be deployed. This will do away with Roaming Charges & basically these operating circles too. Under these circumstances, MNP will have to be applicable on a national scale.
Restricting MNP to regional or ‘telecom circle’ level will be counterproductive since all other services will have become national by then. Hence TRAI seems to be gearing up to offer MNP between different circles first, before new regime begins so that mobile subscribers do not face this tricky situation at a later stage. Do you think taking MNP National will boost its appeal?
