There has been a bummer of an update from Canonical. It has confirmed that it will not ship Ubuntu powered smartphones until at least next year. Earlier it was expected that we would get our hands on these devices during this year. The idea behind Ubuntu is amazing. While it does not have the power to compete with iOS or Android, it shows promise of being a major breakthrough. However its success will ride on its ability to tie up with the right manufacturing and carrier partners.
Ubuntu smartphones as we understand it will allow a person to plug his or her device into a monitor and use a keyboard and mouse. This will ensure that you enjoy a full desktop experience. Somewhat like what Motorola had attempted with its Webtop accessories for the ATRIX-handsets a few years ago. But far better looking and more promising and more powerful.
The company announced last Tuesday that a developer preview of Ubuntu for tablets will be launched on Feb. 21. For a more in depth preview one will have to wait until the Mobile World Congress next week.
