Wikipedia would like to really spread the word. Its word, that is. It aims to try to increase access to its content to those who can’t afford the latest technology. To achieve this it has been getting into collaborations with its carriers to deliver free mobile web viewing. By this means it will be able to reach those significant masses for whom an advanced cellphone is out of reach. It has been able to do this partly on account of the financial support provided to it by a grant from Knight News Challenge and South Africa’s Praekelt Foundation.
As a result of the effort of the non-profit Wikipedia Zero the communal ‘gyan site’ will now be able to offer its content through SMS and USSD messages. Users who want to know more will need to send a text message to get an article back, with no need to access the web. This then will represent a big leap forward in democratizing online information and making it easily available even for the millions who do not have access to a smartphone or a computer. May not be ideal for large articles though. We can look forward to a whole lot of bandwidth being used by messages.
