Stop the presses! Apple’s inventing a Smart Pen. It’s coming to stores near you in a magical future known as “Never.” Yes, Apple did just secure a reissue for a fascinating-looking touchscreen pen computer. But the device, oddly described in the patent as just “Portable Computer,” wasn’t invented in 2013, 2012 or even in 2007. It was invented in 1997 by United Kingdom inventor Lyndsay Williams.
Williams, who never worked for Apple but did once work for Microsoft, created the pen-sized device 15 years ago while working for BT Labs and dubbed it “SmartQuill.”
The goal, according to Williams’ website, was to “encapsulate an entire handheld computer in a pen.” As the patent describes it, she did just that. The SmartQuill included everything from multiple accelerometers and tilt-sensors to a microphone, speakers, a proximity sensor for the tiny touchscreen and a radio transmitter. The inventor also envisioned an on-board “camera and a data store, in communication with a cellular tower.” Just like today’s mobile devices, it ran on an ARM processor. And, yes, GPS was also a possibility. The SmartQuill not only functioned as a pen, but thanks to the motion sensors, could enable certain functions via pen gestures.
