Since 2007, an engineering team has been working on a hydrogen race car concept called the Forze. Now in its sixth rendition, the new Forze VI is the first rendition scaled up to full size – other others have been scale models.
The Forze VI has a fuel cell and motor output of 260 horsepower, giving it a 0-62 time of just under 4 seconds. Two motors power the car, one each for the rear wheels.
Interestingly, the water generated as vapor by the fuel cells isn’t dumped into the atmosphere, but is instead condensed in channels and used to cool the brakes on the car. An innovative idea.
Engineers at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands unveiled the car and explained its unusual rear differential, which is just a controller that independently changes the speed of each motor to improve traction and reduce drag around corners. This, the Forze team says, shaves seconds off each lap on a GT circuit.
The Delft engineers will begin the full-scale build of a working Forze VI this spring and plan to begin track trials this summer to eventually compete against 30 gasoline-powered cars at the Dutch Caterham Cup. The team would also like to race it on the Nurburgring Nordshleife, which could give them a shot at speed records for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
