(Before It's News)

PVR Cinemas, one of India’s largest chains of multi-screen movie theaters have introduced the country’s first fully-functional NFC based mobile payment system. Apparently it was set to coincide with the launch of BlackBerry’s latest flagship devices as well as Operating System; BB OS 10.

As we reported before, BlackBerry with its  Operating System has attempted a bold stroke to recapture lost customer loyalty. With cutting edge technology incorporated into its latest devices; the BlackBerry Z10 as well as Q10, these devices also include Near Field Communications (NFC) platform.

NFC is essentially an inter-device communication platform that attempts to establish a pathway that can be used to send & receive information. The important aspect of the standard is that it doesn’t require significant human intervention & it is smart to decide exactly which protocol to use.

How is NFC being deployed?

Being envisaged to prompt users to check out latest trailers & other advertisements, PVR eventually settled for the simple requirement of paying for merchandise & tickets. Though NFC is being touted as an effortless mobile payment technique, users won’t be able to source funds from their bank accounts.

A special NFC based application from PVR will have to be installed. Thereafter patrons will have to top up their PVR-only accounts with money. Once a transaction demands monetary exchange, users will have to start the application & bring it near the NFC terminal installed across PVR complexes. The money will then be deducted from this pre-paid account.

Restricted to BlackBerry Phones, the app & the platform presently have a much curtailed audience. But that will soon change, when PVR plans to release iOS & Android versions of the payment app.  Could the platform be relegated to being a loyalty program only? What do you think?
