US smartphone owners check their Facebook accounts an average of 14 times a day, for two minutes and 22 seconds each time, according to a new research report by IDC released on Wednesday.

The total average time smartphone owners spent on the social network was half an hour per day, IDC said.

“Smartphones, coupled with rich applications and mobile data services, allow us to connect with our family, friends and community from the moment we wake up until the end of our day. Our research shows that, rather than feeling overwhelmed by it, we enjoy and value this increased social connectedness,” IDC said in its report.

The Facebook-sponsored IDC report was based on queries of 7,446 US iPhone and Android users aged 18 to 44, who were asked about their phone usage during one week in March.

The survey revealed that 70 percent of US smartphone users are frequent Facebook visitors, with more than half checking in on the social network every day. The most popular applications were for messaging, Web browsing and Facebook, IDC said.

Indeed, about 84 percent of the time spent communicating with smartphones involved email, text messages or social networks, while just 16 percent of the time was spent on voice calls, IDC reported.

Nearly 80 percent of the survey participants reported checking their handsets within 15 minutes of waking, with 62 percent grabbing their phones immediately after waking. A surprisingly high number of users, 47 percent, checked Facebook while preparing a meal, while half reported checking Facebook with their smartphones while at a movie.

Half of the participants reported playing games on Facebook on their smartphones a few times a day.

The peak time for checking Facebook is during the evening, just prior to going to bed, according to the report.

“People have a universal need to connect with others, especially those they care deeply about,” the IDC researchers said.

“This coupled with mass market adoption of smartphones means that social engagement via phones has become mainstream.”

“This increased sense of connectedness is the primary reason we use these technologies with the frequency and duration that we do.”

Roughly half the US population uses smartphones. That figure is expected to reach 181.4 million this year before climbing to 222.4 million within the next four years.
