Aviate Launcher hit the Android community last week, and it indeed took us all by storm. A minimalistic launcher, that is also innovative, was something we were not expecting. I still get stunned when a new home replacement hits the Android streets, and these creative developers bring on that WOW factor. I will admit that when a new launcher surfaces, I will give it a try, but will usually go back to my precious Nova Launcher after a day or so. This did not happen with Aviate Launcher.

The developers of Aviate Launcher wanted to bring a Google Now card-like look, with easy access to your apps. You are only given three screens to use, and unlike other launchers, you cannot add more screens. Some of you might cringe when hearing that, but I assure you it is not that bad at all. The three screens you are given, are your homescreen, collections screens, and your app drawer. Your hoemscreen you can customize with widgets and favorite apps. The collection screen is what Aviate does for you, which is actually very nice. It categorizes your apps in such categories as, social, games, work, music, entertainment, etc. You can even add certain categories to fit your prevalent lifestyle. The app drawer I found kind of ugly, and messy. Your apps are placed in alphabetical order, which is nice, but they way they do it is kind of an eye sore. You get these huge capital letters that indicate where you are in the alphabet for each one of your apps, which I can see what they were trying to accomplish here, but it just does not work for me. Hopefully an update will clean that up a little bit.

When it comes to your homescreen, you can add any widget you please. By holding down on your display, you can easily add and remove widgets, but be careful, because the more you add, the more the widgets get compressed. There is a “layer’ to your homescreen, that is indicated by a down arrow on the top-right of your screen.  This is where Aviate changes up throughout the day. In this section, it will change from, morning, home, going somewhere, work, settings, and night. So with each time of day, you can customize what you want to see during that time of day. There is also an option to find locations all around you, and even gives you tips to those places given by other users. How lovely they bring us all together like that.

Overall, I think Aviate Launcher is the way to go if you want something far from the ordinary on your device. Like I said at the beginning, I have not gone back to the traditional Nova Launcher I love so much, and have stuck with Aviate for over a week now. Check out my video below to see it all in action. In the video, I mention that I will send out a couple invites, so if you have not gotten an invite yet, you might want to check out this video. If you have tried the new launcher out, let us know what you think about it.
