Heating systems, sewage, subway and even traffic in road tunnels are increasing the groundwater temperature.

Heated groundwater aquifers can become a source of renewable energy for big cities. According to an analytical heat flux model developed by researchers from KIT and ETH Zurich, increased heat in the groundwater is mainly caused by an increase in surface temperatures and heat release from buildings.
