Big Story Weather from November 4:
High pressure along the East Coast kept conditions cooler yesterday. The storm system began moving into the Southwest bringing heavy rains to places in New Mexico and Texas along with snow over the Rockies.
Big Story Weather Discussion for November 5:
Surface Map 11AM: High pressure off the East Coast will provide the region with one more nice day from Maine to the Carolinas. A strong winter storm will push into the Southern Plains this morning bringing snowfall from Denver to Minneapolis. Showers will stretch from Kansas to Iowa and thunderstorms will stretch from Texas to Oklahoma.
Surface Map 11PM: Low pressure will push towards Iowa. The showers will extend into the Southern Great Lakes and Ohio River Valley. The snow line will extend from Michigan back to Minneapolis and southward into Iowa. Thunderstorms will still be found from Kansas to Texas.
Severe Weather: There will be no significant severe weather events, however expect to see some severe weather in the form of damaging winds in Oklahoma and Texas ahead of the cold front.
Winter Weather: The storm system moving across the country today will be responsible for a wide swath of 1-3 inch snowfall. A heavier band will setup from Central Nebraska to Minneapolis and into the Northwest Michigan. This area will see around 4-8 inches of snowfall.
Flooding: The onshore flow over Southwest Louisiana is setting the stage for some possible flooding in that region.
Tropical Weather: No impacts across the Atlantic Basin.
Winds: The two areas of concern for today are over SOCAL behind the strong front and then the strong Easterlies over the East Coast of Florida will also create a wind advisory area.

This family includes the most powerful cloud – the cumulus-nimbus – and one of the most friendly clouds – the cumulus cloud. The next family is the stratus clouds. Here we find our favorite Fog cloud lying on the ground – the gloomy family of clouds. Lastly we have the cirrus clouds. These are the clouds way up in the sky usually made from ice crystals.

November 5, 2013 Storm Tracker Update:
Right Image: This is the latest imagery from Typhoon Haiyan that currently has winds around 70kts and pressure near 970mb. The storm will continue to gain strength as it moves towards the west and Manila PI.
Eastern Pacific Ocean: Low pressure moving away from Hawaii will slowly push towards SOCAL over the next few days bringing showers to the region. Low pressure moving through Southern Alaska is bringing a significant winter storm to the region. A third strong low pressure area moving through the Central Plains is also bringing with it a winter storm and some severe weather to the Plains and Gulf Coast.
Atlantic Ocean: Low pressure to the west of England will bring another dark and gloomy day to the region along with showers. Low pressure moving through Central Europe will bring another day of showers and possibly thunderstorms to Germany and Italy. Low pressure moving through the Middle East will bring a few showers to the region.
Western Pacific: Typhoon Haiyan is currently tracking to the west and will eventually push into Manila or very close over the next few days bringing strong winds and heavy rains to the area. Low pressure over the Northern Pacific will continue to track towards Alaska. Low pressure over Northern Russia will bring snow showers to the region.
Indian Ocean: There are two areas being watched in the basin for possible tropical development. At this time, however, they are only producing enhanced convection over the area.
Southern Hemisphere: There are multiple waves moving across the basin. The first low pressure system is bringing showers to Northern Argentina and Southern Brazil. The second low pressure area is bringing gusty winds to Southern Africa. A third low pressure area is moving across towards Western Australia and will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for November 5, 2013:
Day 1-3: High pressure off the East Coast will make for one more nice day along the coast, however look for strong winds over Eastern Florida that could lead to some coastal flooding and also rip currents. The strong storm system will finally push into the Central Plains and then the Great Lakes overnight. Look for a wide array of weather patterns. We will see thunderstorms over the Southern Plains shifting into the Gulf Coast. Rain showers will be found from the Great Lakes back to the Central Plains. Snow and heavy snowfall will be possible from the Western Lakes back towards Minneapolis and Omaha along with Denver. High pressure will build in over the Western Rockies behind this storm system bringing another shot of colder weather. A new storm system will approach the Pacific Northwest with showers. Day two the storm system will move into Southeast Canada allowing for the snow to fall over the Western Lakes. Showers and thunderstorms will dominate the weather from Ohio to the Gulf Coast. High pressure will build in over the Plains, while more showers will be over the Pacific Northwest with the new storm system. The period will finish with high pressure over the Plains and extending into the East Coast. The storm system will push out of the Pacific Northwest and into the Northern Rockies bringing snow to the region.
Day 4-7: The period will start with high pressure over the Eastern US, while the clipper system pushes through the Northern Plains with a few showers and snow showers. A new storm system will be approaching the Pacific Northwest. The period will end with yet another significant storm system in the Plains bringing another round of snow, rain and thunderstorms to the region. High pressure will dominate both coasts.
Day 8-12: The period will start with a strong low pressure area over the Southern Plains bringing rain, thunderstorms and severe weather to portions of the Southern Plains into the Gulf Coast. High pressure will be over the Southwest and another storm system will push into the Pacific Northwest. Day ten the strong storm system will bring the Great Lakes rain, snow and thunderstorms all along the East Coast and Gulf Coast. The next storm system is expected to bring rain and snow to the West Coast. The period will finish with multiple storm systems tracking across the US.
Long Range Outlook: The period will start with a storm system over the Eastern US and a storm system developing over the Pacific Northwest. The Plains will be dry and cool during this time. The middle of the period will have high pressure along the East Coast, while a new storm system develops over the Southern Plains bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region. A new storm system will also be approaching the Pacific Northwest again. The period will end with another powerful storm system over the Pacific Northwest bringing more rain and snows to the region.
Green Energy Report for November 5, 2013:
Wave Energy: There will be moderate amounts of energy over the Pacific Northwest as the next storm system moves into the region. There will be slight amounts of energy over the SOCAL region that will increase as the day goes on however. There will be slight amounts of energy over the Gulf Coast region. The Southeast will see an increase due to strong gradient driven winds. The Northeast will have slight amounts as well.
Hydro Energy: There will be an increase in energy over the Pacific Northwest as the next storm moves into the region mostly short term energy. There will also be short term energy from the Southern Plains into the Great Lakes along with long term energy from Denver to Minneapolis into the Western Lakes.
Solar Energy: The best places for solar energy today will be over the Northern Rockies extending into the Southwest. The second place will be along the Gulf Coast, however more cloud cover may keep it limited to the afternoon. A third place will be along the Mid-Atlantic to the Northeast.
Wind Energy: The best place for wind energy today will be over SOCAL as down sloping winds kick in. A second location will be over the Northern Plains behind the cold front. A third place will develop over Eastern Florida and this will be associated with strong easterly winds.
Weather and Your Wallet for Omaha NE:
A strong winter storm is going to move into the region today. This will create a wide array of weather starting as rain, mixing with thunderstorms, then changing back to a rain and snow mix before turning all to snow. Rainfall totals will be around 1.25 inches and snowfall totals will be around a Trace to 2 inches.
Dining: Today will be a great day to eat lunch at work as the weather conditions are going to be bad all day.
Transportation: This morning expect to see some delays as the rain starts to pick up in intensity. This will be true for both the roadways and also at the airport. Later this afternoon expect to see conditions get worse as the snow starts to fly. There will be delays on the roadways along with significant delays at the airport.
Shopping: Today will be a nice day to reschedule your shopping plans, unless you need to get supplies for the storm such as batteries and milk.
Electricity: There will be a large demand for heating today as the cold, dreary weather settles in to the region. The biggest consumption will be overnight with the forecast for around 28HDD’s on the day. There will also be an elevated chance to seeing some power outage issues as the snow and rain could lead to icing on the lines.
Yard Work: You will want to make sure that your snow shovel is on stand-by for tomorrow morning.
Construction: Today will be a good day to work on those indoor projects as the conditions outside will not be very good from the rain, snow and also the gusty winds.
Outdoor Venues: If you had plans for the outdoors today, you might want to just reschedule those events.
