(Before It's News)

Perhaps taking on more relevance than the race to be number one in the singles chart, there’s a lot of anticipation as far as the race to be the best-selling game before Christmas Day begins is concerned. This year, it’s likely to be between three titles, all of which being the latest installments in much-loved series yet completely different in just about every aspect.

All were released partly with Christmas in mind, no longer than three months before the shops closed late on Christmas Eve. Some of them were released to coincide with the introduction of both the Xbox One and PS4, both of which are competing for supremacy themselves in the hotly-contested console market, but which three games are competing to finish top of the tree sales-wise?

Ghosting in

call of dutyThe most likely winner is Call of Duty: Ghosts. The newest installment in the long-running series was released especially for those who had a shiny new PS4 or Xbox One to play with come Christmas time and if some of the critical response is anything to go by, it’s likely to be a huge success, flying off the shelves in next to no time.

In terms of story, the latest CoD game concerns a group of Special Ops from the US who are trying to repel an invasion of the country by a new Latin American superpower who seized large parts of Central America. As for sales, Call of Duty looks set to beat its rivals with odds of 1/5 according to Ladbrokes, which speaks volumes.

Alive and kicking

fifa-14_1Another major contender is FIFA 14, the latest in the long-running FIFA franchise. Versions for consoles old and new  have been released, but two new additions allowing for human intelligence to determine a player’s ability and gameplay changes which can be affected by the on-field weather and reactions from the crowd make it more appealing than previous editions.

Grand Theft Auto V is the third contender for the number one spot. However, what counts against the game’s success in the charts is its release date – it has been out in the shops since September. Also, it was the last GTA game to be released for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Despite that, the game itself has received rave reviews and could be a great gift for anyone who somehow forgot about it.
