Don’t be appalled if you see a helicopter like device deliver your next online shopping item on your doorsteps. Amazon is testing a highly unique delivery system which includes drones. Dubbed as Amazon PrimeAir, the service uses 8-propeller drones which is about the size of a remote-controlled airplane to transport shoe-box-size plastic bins from fulfillment centers to customers’ homes.
Bezos called these drones as ‘octocopters’ and touted that they can travel 10 miles and carry packages weighing up to five pounds to doorsteps in less than 30 minutes. He explains it, the service could be up and running within four to five years. “It will work, it will happen, and it’s going to be alot of fun,” he said in an interview on CBS.
A demo video posted on the company’s website showed the tiny robotic devices picking up packages in small yellow buckets from Amazon’s fulfillment centers and then whizzing through the air to deliver the items to customers just 30 minutes after they made their purchase on Amazon.com.
The world’s largest retailer says PrimeAir will be ready to start commercial operations as soon as the Federal Aviation Administration, which is working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles, finalizes the necessary regulations. Same day delivery phenomenon is catching up fast as competition among retailers soars by day. Also, we can expect other players to deploy similar drone delivery system which will further heat up the e-commerce space.
