Apple has scooped up social media analytics company Topsy for a reported $200M. This is the first time the iPhone and iPad maker has bought an analytics company as most of its previous downloads includes software and hardware firms. Apple and Topsy did not confirm the acquisition but an Apple spokesperson said in a WSJ report that, ”Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose”.
Launched in 2006, Topsy is a one of the few social-analytics start-ups that have access to Twitter’s entire data stream. It has recently created a searchable database of all tweets sent – more than 400 billion – since Twitter’s launch. The company has been one of Twitter’s preferred third-party services, with direct access to the company’s “firehose” of tweets. It also helps clients analyze tweets for various business trends and measure the reach of a campaign, hashtag or message.
Topsy frequently issues data about how information has spread across Twitter during big events. The company’s tools can reveal how often a specific term is tweeted and who is doing the tweeting. The WSJ report suggests that “Topsy’s insights could be useful in several Apple services, including the iTunes media store, Siri voice assistant or iAd advertising platform“.
Apple has been quite active with acquisitions past few month. Last week the company acquired motion tracking firm PrimeSense for $350M. Also, the company bought mapping company Locationary and navigation service HopSpot in July. And in August, Apple acquired another mapping company Embark for an undisclosed sum.
