Laugh all you want, but sharpening pencils is a serious business…just ask Artisanal Pencil Sharpener David Rees. As the number one #2 pencil sharpener in the world, David makes thousands of dollars a year through his pencil sharpening business and even has a book on the topic—appropriately titled ‘How to Sharpen Pencils‘. In this humorous film-festival favorite short from Price Films, David takes us behind the scenes to gain a better perspective of his process that will put your desktop electric pencil sharpener to shame.

“A lot of people think they know how to sharpen pencils but…they don’t, really.”

Anybody who took a pre-CAD mechanical drawing class in college understands the importance of a well-sharpened pencil and how important strength is in addition to the point. As a matter of fact, most people don’t even consciously realize what their lines look like until they take a mechanical drawing/drafting class. From eraser debris brushes to heavy and large straight-edges, the designer’s workspace has seen a dramatic change in tools as our design world becomes increasingly more digital. Humor aside, hopefully this video will help inspire you to dust off some of those old drafting tools or at the least…help prevent you from literally feeding your precious Prismacolor colored pencils into the electric pencil sharpener:
