South Africa’s largest Mobile based, internet driven Instant Messaging Platform, Mxit has officially announced its entry in India.
The current Mobile Based Instant Messaging market is currently crowded with the likes of WeChat, LINE, Nimbuzz and others. But quite evidently WhatsApp is still the market leader. However, this hasn’t deterred other platforms from continuing with their promotional endeavors in a bid to garner users.
Perhaps the same technique has been employed by Mxit. The company that owns the platform has begun advertising the application that apparently works across all major mobile operating systems including JAVA based feature phones. The company claims, Mxit is available for download across more than 8,000 different feature phones, smartphones and tablets.
What does Mxit offer? Despite being relatively frugal in terms of features, WhatsApp usage has grown owing to its first–mover advantage. Realizing the need of add–on features, platforms like WeChat, LINE and other started adding multiple types of emoticons and other features like Audio, Video, Games and even classifieds.
Though Mxit is essentially an internet dependent instant messaging platform first, it has some interesting features like Chat Cards. These are essentially lightweight HTML5 web–apps or games that can be sent, received and opened within conversations itself. Mxit has even segmented the offering. Along with consumer iteration, there is an enterprise section too, with features that are meant for Brands and NGOs.
Most notable among these is Mxit Glue which can be used by political parties to communicate with constituencies and measure the impact in real time. Another one is Mxit Reach which is supposed to work as a CRM Counseling Platform and finally there is Mxit Launch which serves as a Publishing Platform for creating pages on Mxit. Apart from introducing business oriented features, Mxit has even thought of the regional aspects as the app is currently available in Hindi and English. Additionally it will soon support 10 additional regional languages.
Despite being a late entrant, Mxit does appear to have many interesting features that could boost its adoption. What do you think?
The App can be downloaded here for Android based handsets and feature phone users need to head here.
