Steve Wozniak has been somewhat of an anomaly. Co-founder of the now hugely popular computer company, Woz has a lot of admiration for what Android has accomplished by pushing an open platform to the mobile segment as opposed to the late Steve Job’s disdain for the platform. There have been numerous times in the past when his quips on Android and Google have been widely misinterpreted to show that he prefers Android over Apple, but I think there is a more nuanced view to his assertions.
Recently while speaking at the Apps World conference in San Francisco, he said that Apple should consider making an Android phone for the secondary phone market while keeping its focus on its own range of iOS phones. He implies that even though Android and iOS are seen to be rivals, there could be many ways for Apple to gain more customers and deliver their trademark hardware to customers in markets which will simply not be able to afford the cost of owning the latest iPhone. Besides this, he also opined that Blackberry made a huge mistake by not using Android during its ill fated turnaround last year. By focusing on building their own mobile stack, they introduced another OS in an already crowded segment making its own doom predictable to larger degree. Android on Blackberry would have given the phone maker a significant boost compared to BB 10. There are rumors that Nokia is currently working on low cost Android phone but nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
While Woz’s argument does carry some weight, I don’t think Apple will look at making that jump. Apple’s devices are all about owning the complete experience and them deploying Android on their phone will go against everything the company has been doing for the last few years. I don’t think that this will happen unless something entirely unexpected happens to Apple when it comes to the mobile sector. Apple has had a good run over the years and parallels can be drawn with Blackberry’s incredible run during the last decade. It just could happen that Apple’s innovation might run out and to cover this eventuality, they would have to make strategic bets on unconventional product strategies.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Apple will ever make an Android phone?
