(N.Morgan) In the latest step to tracking and surveillance law enforcement has come up with new cellphone technologies to keep better track of you and to collect your data.Your privacy has left the building, with Elvis. Without the right protections in place, the government can gain access to this information — and to your private life — with disturbing ease. As long as it is turned on, your mobile phone registers its position with cell towers every few minutes, whether the phone is being used or not.
Since mobile carriers are retaining location data on their customers, government officials can learn a tremendous amount of detailed personal information about you by accessing your location history from your cell phone company, ranging from which friends you’re seeing to where you go to the doctor to how often you go to church. The Justice Department and most local police forces can get months’ worth of this information, without you ever knowing — and often without a warrant from a judge.
I wonder what most people need cell phones for. Children do not need them except perhaps to carry for safety on their way to and from school. What did we do before cellphones? We used public phones or waited until we got home or to work to call someone. I understand that they are now essential for most business people, and that is not a problem, if one does not worry about being tracked. However, it a cell phone is not essential, why give the spies the instrument for tracking you, at your expense? There is increasing medical evidence that cellphones used up against the ear causes problems, but we will have to wait a while to see if this pans out as true or not. Yes, there is some scary arse future coming our way.
