Publishing Houses have apparently started to warm–up to the concept of eBooks.
Amidst the rising adoption of large screened Smartphones and Tablets, many Publishing Giants were worried that eBooks and eBook readers coupled with other electronic mediums for consumption of content, might eat into their revenues of physical book sales.
Traditional book delivery and consumption channels are certainly being challenged by the growing use of internet enabled devices that have started to mimic the actual dimensions of books and its pages. Moreover, the inbuilt animations offer virtually the same experience of reading a physical copy. But these aspects are supposed to be more of an advantage rather than a growing threat, advised A Sethumadhavan, NBT Chairman,
“E-book should be considered a challenge and not a threat to traditional publishing. The two delivery channels have to co-exist and complement each other in an emerging India which is technology-driven. No industry can remain static,”
Should the Publishing Houses be worried? eBooks form a small component of the growing large–screened devices category. If one considers the eBook readers alone, their usage is restricted primarily because of the perceived notion that eBook Readers are highly curtailed in nature and do not offer much beyond content consumption.
Therein lies the opportunity for publishing houses, said Rohit Kumar, Chairman, Read Elsevier India,
“E-books are not a threat but an opportunity for publishers to tap the growing market which is more tech-savvy and has grown up reading digital books”
Though what he said was pretty self–explanatory, it could be extended to mean that Publishers should now set aside their fears that eBooks are eating into their revenues and start publishing content in Digital Format too.
Google Play Store, Amazon and many others offer great platforms for Digital Publications. India’s reputation as a knowledge hungry nation has worked well for content consumption. Now it’s time for publishers to tap into the digital market, instead of fighting it. What do you think?
