“Vikaspedia is part of democratisation of information. Earlier, for some information people had to pay but now most of it will be made available for which they don’t have to pay,” J Satyanarayana, Secretary, Department of Electronics and Information Technology (Deity), said while launching the portal. The Indian government’s computing arm Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)‘s Hyderabad unit built the website.

Government will eventually add 22 Indian languages so more people across India can access the website and reap the benefits. Each aforementioned sector is further divided into sub categories. For example, Education gets sub categories like Child Rights protection, teaching and learning while e-Governance is further divided into e-Governance Service, m-Governance services and so on.  These sub- categories boasts of detailed content that will help the general public know their rights better.

The government also announced launch of software tools to develop Internet-content.“We have used localisation.gov.in tools for converting content of seven e-governance mission mode projects initially, which include content of health, e-district programme, public distribution system, pension, educations and agriculture,” said Deity Joint Secretary Rajendra Kumar.

Moreover, multi-lingual mobile apps were also launched with the website. Apps like KVK Khoj (Krishi Vigyan Kendra locator), CSC Finder (Helps provide information on Common Service Centres), SHELTOR (Locates nearby Government Hostels for students), Ask-An-Expert (mobile based expert services delivery application) and MOTHER (Mobile based maternal health alerts for pregnant women) have relevant information packaged so as maximize the benefits of ongoing schemes to the citizens.

The six MMPs include MCA 21, passport, health and education. The localisation tool will be ingrained in these services, he said. The government has sanctioned Rs15 crore for the project.

In October last year, e-governance transactions crossed 1 billion mark. Recently, the Supreme Court of India launched mobile app to inform users regarding various operations of the court.
