(Before It's News)

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released the latest growth patterns of the Indian Telecom Segment and it appears the industry is making a slow, but steady progress.

An official statement from the regulator revealed the ascension numbers,

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 910.14 million (91.01 Crores) at the end of November, 2013, to 915.19 million (91.5 Crores) at the end of December 2013,”

What this means is that the segment managed to add about 5 Million new customers within a single month. Overall, Telecom companies added about 0.5% of the total subscriber base. Though it may not appear much in comparison to the total subscriber base, it does indicate that the segment isn’t witnessing stagnation or worse yet, regression.

Considering specific segments, the Mobile subscriber base grew marginally to 88.63 Crores. However, the future appears bleak for landlines which witnessed a continued decline. The subscriber base for fixed terminal communications stood at 2.88 Crores in December 2013.

Vodafone was the highest gainer during this month. Having added 23 Lakh new Customers to its network helped the company swell its subscriber base to about 16 Crores. But that is still not enough to beat current market leader Bharti Airtel who despite adding just 18 Lakh Customers, still has a total subscriber base of 19.84 Crores. Moreover, with forthcoming acquisition of Loop Mobile, Airtel’s lead would be even more difficult to beat for a few more months. Aircel closely followed Airtel by adding about 16 Lakh subscribers.

Beating these three companies in terms of growth, Videocon registered the highest growth rate of 8.15% in subscribers. Operating in just 4 of the 22 Telecom Circles, Videocon managed to add 3.5 Lakh subscribers.

India’s Telecom Industry may not be showing accelerated growth which once was a norm, but it is nonetheless on a slow path of growth. With Data becoming more prevalent and 4G about to start soon, will the pace pick–up?
