(Before It's News)

Microsoft has updated Office.com to offer web apps for Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Powerpoint, Word and OneNote.

Office.com will feature all the Office Productivity Apps that made Microsoft famous like MS Word, OneNote, PowerPoint, Calendar and Excel. Additionally, it will also feature e–mail platform Outlook, contact management service People as well as recently rechristened Virtual Storage platform OneDrive.

Users will merely require a Microsoft Account to gain access to the complete suite. Office Online has been kept free to use and all the files created are stored on OneDrive cloud storage.

Rivaling Google Docs? Office Online appears to be very similar to Google Docs. Taking a leaf out of Google’s platform, users of Office Online will have all their files stored on OneDrive. Moreover, multiple users can create, sync and collaborate on a single document simultaneously. Essentially, Microsoft has tweaked Office Online to offer an mass-appeal Enterprise level collaborative tool.

Microsoft has observed a peculiar practice. The users of MS Office routinely work offline and then store the created files either on Google’s GDrive or on some other Cloud storage platforms like Dropbox, etc. Ironically, Google’s Google Docs have not been able to enjoy the same level of adoption as compared to the offline productivity suite that Microsoft offers. This might have prompted Microsoft to develop an adaptable platform that switches the offline tools to the online domain.

What about Office365? It is interesting to note that Office 365 offers very similar functionality. Under these new developments, it seems futile to develop another platform. But, Office 365 has a much larger ecosystem that involves multiple We Apps besides the one present on Office.com, like VoIP, Exchange Server, Social Networking integration as well as Business Intelligence and Data Mining tools.

Perhaps Office.com is merely a scaled down version of Office 365 that allows access to elementary products that form a small component of the whole Office Productivity segment. What do you think?
