Pinterest had a great start for 2014. The social scrapbooking network acquired image recognition and visual search startup VisualGraph, launched a recipe search engine, added GIF support and rolled out personalized ‘Interests’ Pages. Today, Pinterest has announced that it has revamped its mobile website similar to that of its iOS and Android apps.
“As we launch in new countries around world, we want to make it easy for everyone to access Pinterest—no matter where you are or what device you’re using. That’s why we recently updated our mobile website”, posted the company on its blog. The updated version of Pinterest.com on mobile phones has a cleaner look and feel, while offering the same features, such as more useful pins and related pins, found on the desktop site and app. Users on tablets, smartphones, desktop devices, and other gadgets will now feel as if they are sharing a familiar ecosystem at all times.
Pinterest also revealed that 75 percent of the platform’s traffic comes from native mobile apps on iOS and Android. This is up from 50 percent in 2013. According to Pinterest the new design offers a a “cleaner, more modular code” that makes future development easier.
Last year in October, when Pinterest closed a $225 million round of funding, the company noted that it needed to do something in order to make its service more accessible to international users. Over the past year, the company has added a number of different languages to the platform (22 in total) which includes Finnish, Korean and Russian. The company’s mobile website was popular in the regions where users don’t have access to these native apps. Although, Pinterest’s native apps still remains the fastest way for its access, the mobile site is also gradually growing.
