The India Railways will now proactively send out SMS conveying the confirmation of tickets.
Putting an end to customers’ confusion surrounding the confirmation of Berth against a ticket procured in the Waiting List, the Railways will now start to send out ticket booking status messages.
How will the tweaked system work? Earlier, a passenger unsure about the status of his or her ticket had to send out an SMS with the PNR Number. The system would then check the latest status and reply back. The passenger could also log–on to the IRCTC website and get the latest status or even punch–in the PNR at any of the hundreds of kiosks strewn across Railway Stations.
But the tweaked system changes the onus of confirmation onto the railways themselves, said a Senior Railway official,
“The wait-listed passenger will get a SMS about the status of the ticket on the mobile phone number given at the time of ticket booking. Once the SMS-based service is operational, passengers will get the updated status of their wait-listed tickets automatically”
Moreover in case the passenger doesn’t receive an SMS, it simply means the Ticket hasn’t been allocated a berth and it may stand cancelled and money refunded.
In order to avail the service, passengers will have to register the mobile number with IRCTC as well as one’s bank. The bank provides MMID (Mobile Money Identifier) and OTP (One Time Password) for authorization of payment.
The railways are perhaps the most adaptive when it comes technology. The largest employer in India has been adding Tech Dependent facilities in large numbers. However, the most improvement seems to have happened in the Ticketing Segment. What do you think?
