Online Marketplace eBay is all set to welcome multitude of small retailers into its foray.
Micro and Small physical retailers who had been openly opposed to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) have jointly decided to choose eBay as their platform to host their e–Shops. eBay could be in for a huge surprise as the country presently holds more than 6 Crore anti–FDI retailers, many of whom are quite eager to conduct their business online and do not want foreign investments and associated companies encroaching on their turf.
It seems eBay and SnapDeal are being jointly considered. Praveen Khandelwal, the General Secretary of the Confederation of All-India Traders endorsed the marketplace model followed by eBay and SnapDeal saying,
“Small traders will be interested to join hands with eBay because the company will facilitate their online stores and will never compete with sellers,”
The Traders Association further clarified their preference towards eBay by saying,
“The e-commerce company was the first to approach them. Previously, Small Traders Associations and the Government had introduced the “e-Vyapar” platform to help small traders trade online.”
It is interesting to note that the Government had offered a virtual marketplace for these small traders in the form of e– Vyapar, but these traders jointly feel that the Government gave them a very raw deal and the platform was not mature enough to compete with the likes of Flipkart and others who coincidentally are pro–FDI.
Having the Small Traders joining eBay en masse, will have dual benefit for eBay and SnapDeal. On one hand eBay stands to earn from the sales of these traders. Since these are relatively smaller transactions, they will run in hundreds of thousands of them on a daily basis. Secondly, onboarding small retail traders who are anti-FDI will give the company a more neutral and small-retailer friendly image than the rest. This is certainly good the company in a country that is advertising ‘Swadeshi’ heavily.
With other options available why are traders strictly considering just eBay and SnapDeal?
