YouTube Drives Most Social Referral Traffic: Shareaholic Study

A latest report from Shareaholic has revealed that YouTube delivers some of the most valuable web traffic of any social site. The social discovery platform published its first ever report, which consists of the world’s largest social networks. Dubbed as “Social Referrals That Matter”, the report was made by studying 6 months of data (Sept’13 – Feb’14) across Shareholic’s 200,000+ sites reaching more than 250 million unique monthly visitors.

According to the report YouTube delivers the most engaged traffic overall, with the lowest bounce rate of 43.19%, the most pages per visit of 2.99, and the longest visit duration of 227.82 seconds. “Why are visitors from YouTube so engaged? …because video itself is so engaging and viewers are likely to maintain a similar level of engagement with related content. Therefore, video watchers are especially receptive to links within video descriptions which complement the audio+visual content they just consumed”, said Danny Wong, marketing manager at Shareaholic in the blog.

Surprisingly, Google+ ranked just behind YouTube, and Twitter and Facebook are tied for fourth place. The social network from Google along with LinkedIn drive more engaged traffic than social giants Facebook and Twitter. On average, Google+ users spend more than three minutes with content shared by friends within their circles. During each visit, they also visit 2.45 pages, and bounce about half (50.63%) of the time. . LinkedIn users meanwhile spend over two minutes on each link they click, view 2.23 pages with each visit, and bounce 51.28 percent of the time.

Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest took the fourth, fifth and sixth spot respectively. StumbleUpon on the other hand delivers least engaged traffic among the lot with as users spend 54.09 seconds on site, 1.5 pages per visit.
