IBM introduced a new suite of cybersecurity offerings on Monday aimed at helping enterprises and other organizations protect critical data.

The company’s Threat Protection System and Critical Data Protection Program are comprised of security software and services that build on current offerings, but are more tailored towards enterprises seeking to disrupt zero day attacks.

IBM said the new services are the culmination of two years of internal investments, along with previous acquisitions.

“Today’s introduction of the IBM Threat Protection System and Critical Data Protection Program represent two years of significant investment in organic development and the acquisition of companies, including Q1 Labs, Trusteer, Guardium, Ounce Labs, Watchfire and Fiberlink/MaaS360,” IBM said in its announcement.

The company said its Threat Protection System leverages security intelligence and behavioral analytics to go beyond conventional defenses and firewalls to disrupt attacks across the entire attack chain – from break-in to exfiltrate.

The system includes an end-to-end architecture of analytic and forensics software that “helps organizations continuously prevent, detect and respond to ongoing and sophisticated cyber attacks, and in some cases, eliminate the threat before the damage has occurred,” IBM said.

The new Critical Data Protection Program will help safeguard customers’ critical data with security consulting services based on assets from Guardium, StoredIQ and IBM Research.

“An organization’s fortune is often driven by less than two percent of its enterprise data, which has major impact on competitive advantage, brand reputation, market value and business growth,” IBM said.

Kris Lovejoy, General Manager of IBM Security Services, said for many enterprises the issue of cybersecurity has become a high priority.

“Concerns over the ability to protect critical data from cyber attacks have moved center stage in the board room,” she said.

“Cyber attacks and loss of data have the ability to impact brand reputation, reduce shareholder value and open an organization to litigation. IBM’s new software and services are designed to provide these executives with a unique solution that lets them keep their focus on the day-to-day needs of their customers and driving business revenue.”

The company noted that critical data is the lifeblood of an enterprise, accounting for some 70 percent of the value of a publicly traded corporation. The challenge for these organizations is determining what that data is, where it resides, who has access to it, and how it is protected.

“Data loss can take days or more to discover in more than 95 percent of cases, and weeks or more to contain in more than 90 percent of cases, a lag that can have a catastrophic impact on a business,” the company said.

IBM began its dedicated cyber security business in late 2011, and has since risen to become one of the largest players in the space.

Separately, Symantec also launched new security offerings on Monday, introducing its Managed Security Services – Advanced Threat Protection (MSS-ATP), and Symantec Advanced Threat Protection Solution.

Available in June, MSS-ATP is a managed service that seeks to shorten the time it takes to detect, prioritize and respond to security incidents. Symantec said the service accomplishes this by integrating its endpoint security with third-party network security vendors’ products.

Symantec’s Advanced Threat Protection Solution, which is estimated to be generally available within the next year and scheduled to be in beta testing within six months, is what ties it all together.

The company said the end-to-end solution would deliver integrated advanced threat protection across the endpoint, email and gateway to provide critical detection and response capabilities at every control point.
