Guess the number of bears in the freezer
Jun 1, 2014
Climate: WG2

About a year ago I had to endure a fairly unpleasant interview on the subject of polar bears with the BBC’s Shelagh Fogerty (transcript here, my contemporaneous post here). Ms Fogerty was fine, but I was constantly interrupted by Greenpeace bigwig John Sauven who objected to my pointing out that estimates of polar bear numbers were in essence hypotheses, being based on computer simulations. This position was flatly denied by Sauven, who accused me of being a flat-earther for my temerity in doubting what he was telling me.

I was therefore amused when a reader pointed me to a recent post by Susan Crockford which reveals that I was being far too polite in dignifying estimates of polar bear numbers as “hypotheses”. She has learned that the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group has been playing a game of “guess the number of bears in the freezer”.

These people are ridiculous.

Given the recent testimony of Botkin before US Congress as reported by AW, “Policycritic writes: You need to read this, Anthony. He dismantles the IPCC 2014 report for Congress. ” which includes plenty of Polar bear claim deconstruction, Greenpeace were collecting more foots in mouth.

Greenpeace… they are trying to get money for work on Arctic Sunrise, so I thought, have they got it back? On looking, according to MarineTraffic no transmission since 30th Nov 2013, at Murmansk

Things then get murky

2rd Jan 2014 there is

By its Order of November 22, 2013, ITLOS ordered that Arctic Sunrise and all detained persons be released and be allowed to leave the territory of the Russian Federation upon the Netherlands’s posting of a financial security in the amount of 3,600,000 euros with the competent authority of the Russian Federation.[2] After serving two months in detention the charges of hooliganism against the Arctic 30 were dropped and they were released. The Dutch Government has prepared the bank guarantee pursuant to the Tribunal Order to secure the release of the ship.[3]

First I have heard of money being involved.

Hmm… well

Donate £15

Which could help keep the pressure on the oil giants by funding our team of expert campaigners

Donate £25

Which could help get the Arctic Sunrise back where she belongs by helping to fund her refit – and you can claim your free My Arctic Sunrise Pin badge.

Donate £50

Which could help secure a global sanctuary in the Arctic by funding our lobbying work

And up to £1000 or other! And provision for monthly.

So where is Arctic Sunrise?

I wonder whether Greenpeace will visit the Russian Federation without permission again? Beware Bear aggression.
