Yesterday, Google announced an expansion of their Google Fiber program, bringing the holy grail of internet speed to four more cities across the US: Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, and Raleigh-Durham metro areas.
Currently, Google Fiber is active in Provo, Utah; Austin and Kansas City, according to SmallBusiness.com.
Google’s blog post states that they see the rollout as a “long-term investment” and details they’ve been “working closely with city leaders over the past year” in order to prep for the fiber rollout. The coming months will contain infrastructure planning and construction.
Fiber began five years ago as an experiment in Kansas City, and the community response in Fiber cities since has been overwhelmingly positive. Google is currently exploring expanding the service to Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, and San Jose.
Residents of the newly announced cities can click this link to stay up to date on the project’s progression and receive notifications when the service reaches their neighborhood. For everyone else: Bringing Google Fiber to your doorstep is a joint effort, so contact your city leadership and get the ball rolling.
