March 10, 2015 – Statement by Jason Oxman, Chief Executive Officer, Electronic Transactions Association (ETA), regarding the confirmation of Michelle Lee to head the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
“ETA applauds Michelle Lee on her confirmation as the Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Intellectual property issues are important to the payments technology industry, and we are pleased that Ms. Lee brings both private sector technology and PTO leadership experience to her new role. We look forward to working with her to ensure that the deployment of innovative payments technology helps grow our economy while improving the lives of all Americans.
ETA is a vocal advocate for patent reform on behalf of our more than 500 member companies. ETA has joined the United for Patent Reform coalition, which includes many ETA members advocating for an end to abusive litigation by patent trolls. A bipartisan bill, The Innovation Act (H.R. 9), will implement these reforms and a companion bill is being prepared in the Senate. ETA has submitted a letter to Congress in in support of bipartisan H.R. 9. As patent owners and inventors, ETA’s member companies seek patent reform that keeps our innovation-driven economy moving forward.”
