The aggregation phenomenon in clay-water systems is a reversible process. The origin of extra-lamellar swelling in Ca montmorillonite dispersion has been revealed. The number of platelets per aggregate/tactoid increases with platelet size, and with very small nanoplatelets no tactoids are observed.
