Everyone already knows that reading and responding to emails is a horrible time suck, one that we are forever trying to make a bit easier. We will never get out from under this email burden, however, if we don’t stop checking our email all the time, everywhere, all day (and all night) long. Adobe did a survey looking into our email habits, and surprise! we are all terrible.
We found that outside of work, Americans most commonly check their email while watching TV (70%), from bed (52%), on vacation (50%), while on the phone (43%), from the bathroom (42%) and even—most dangerously—while driving (18%).
Millennials? You are even worse. You are far more likely to check your work email outside of work hours, 57% of you check your email from the bathroom and 27% of you check your email while driving. Oh, and you are totally fine with using emojis in emails with managers and senior executives. We won’t even comment on that.
All told, we spend 30 hours a week on email. That means you are either spending way too much of your work day on email or way too much time on email in your off hours. Stop it.
