Asthma medications got side-effects and it may suppress the height growth in children if taken before the second birthday, says a new study conducted by researchers of Finland after analyzing more than 12,000 baby boys and baby girls in the country.

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) medication is used in the treatment of asthma and researchers say giving it before the age of two makes the kid not to reach an optimal height later in life.

Few of the past studies too found the same link between asthma steroid and growth of height in children. Those said the medication suppresses the growth in preschoolers.

The Finnish researchers add further steroids are not the most inspired drug option in the treatment of asthma in babies. More studies are required to find an alternative medication for the condition.

Details of the new study were presented at the 54th annual meeting of European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology held in Barcelona, Spain.

The researchers said one in eleven children in UK is diagnosed with asthma. However, the ICS is the only inhaler available to help them get relief from asthma symptoms.

Meanwhile, all the doctors are suggested to measure the weight and height of their baby patients if inhaled steroids are given to control asthma.
