With so many cool things coming out each week, it can be hard to wade through all the rock-awesomeness. With ‘Cool Tools’, we’ve done the hard work for you.
This week we saw everything from a revisit to Marty McFly’s iconic black Toyota pickup from the Back to the Future series, a 3D printable chess set inspired by the Milanese skyline, instructions for building your next conference table from scratch, how to build a ‘smart’ coat rack and more…
Ready? Let’s go!
This week we look at:
DESIGN
Back to the Future Toyota Tacoma Concept
“Toyota, which provided the customized pickup that McFly’s character lusted over in the beginning of the first film, got in on the action with an updated version based on the new Tacoma. Like the original, which was also driven by Michael J. Fox’s character at the end of the first film, this Taco gets a black paint job and a healthy dose of KC HiLite driving lamps, although they’re of the modern LED variety. There are also TRD wheels shod in BFGoodrich tires, although it should be noted the original film truck rode on Goodyears. That said, there are plenty of specific nods to the original car.”
“The inspiration of the Milan Chess Set project takes its origin from a personal story, which includes memories of the past years of the city of Milan. The idea that new modern buildings and historical presences could live side by side, not only in the physical reality but also in a miniature world, has been immediately fascinating to me and stimulated a design process of miniaturization which gave life to a world not yet explored…”
APPS
“Over 200 billion unique life forms at your fingertips..”
“Graphic has all of the tools you need to create everything from detailed technical illustrations to beautiful works of art. Create intricate designs quickly and easily, and continue working on the desktop with Graphic for Mac, or on the go with Graphic for iPad…”
DIY
“I was comissioned to made this conference table for a startup called Yoshirt. I used angle irons to bind 2x6s into a sturdy solid wood tabletop, folding metal sawhorses as legs and wired 4 extension cords to the underside for charging stations. Building furniture for startups is a lot of fun. The energy level and optimism is high and their needs are constantly changing as they explore their potential. This table is great for meetings, but could also be used as a workstation or breakroom lunch table…”
Weather Forecasting Coat Hooks
“When running out the door I often forget to check my phone for the forecast. I hastily make a decision and end up caught in the rain or over dressing for the hot afternoon. With the forecasting coat hooks, the weather can be taken in by just a glance. The dials tell you the high and low temperature of the day, as well as the current temp, so you can accurately judge what layers to put on…”
ROCK AWESOMENESS
“The lights haven’t gone out yet! Sweetgrass Productions is back with Darklight, a film that takes viewers back into a world of light and color…”
Michael J. Fox Demonstrates Self-Lacing Nike Air Mag Sneakers
“Will be available to the public in 2016…”
