Sculptor Shannon Goff Creates a Full-Scale 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V from Cardboard
Having already created a dashboard, a horse-drawn carriage, a helicopter, and various other items out of cardboard, sculptor Shannon Goff might have topped herself with her most recent full-scale cardboard replica project, Miles to Empty.
Measuring in at 19′ x 6’5″ x 4’9″, Goff sculpted a full-scale replica of a Special Edition Collector’s Series 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V – a ‘land yacht’ that she closely associates with her grandfather, who purchased it when she was five-years-old. As anybody who has worked with cardboard knows, the constant act of measuring, scoring, folding, and gluing can oftentimes fee less like a task and more like a meditation. For Goff, this “meditation” consisted of creating every interior and exterior feature of the car directly as she remembers it.
As a native of Detroit, Goff’s subject matter also reflects on the thriving ‘Motor City’ that once existed – a city that’s currently in the stages of going through a meditative rebuilding process itself.
