Back in the 80’s, the survival knife scene was dominated by cheap foreign-made Rambo blades. You know, the ones with the hollow handle that was filled with everything from matches to wire handsaws capped off with a compass that couldn’t point North to save your life. Fast-forward a few decades and the scene has shifted to minimalistic knives that at most, come with only a sheath and MAYBE a sharpening stone or small flint striker or (if you’re lucky) both.
To bridge the gap between the minimalistic and the feature-rich, Loyal Blades has designed a survival knife that combines a quality full-tang blade with a help tool set that can come in handy in both a wilderness and urban environment. Known as TUSK (The Universal Survival Knife)- the knife features a Spanish-made Bohler-Uddeholm 7-inch 440c blade, which helps retain a sharp edge while being rust resistant.
Loyal Blades designed the removable handle using black linen Micarta thermoplastic, making it suitable for rough use. The handle itself can be taken off by removing a few hex screws, which reveals the ‘toolbox’ that lies underneath. Embedded tools include a hammerhead, bit drive socket, spear hole attachment points, hex wrench set and a 5-inch ruler.
If that wasn’t enough, the TUSK also comes with your choice of sheath–an all-leather version or a fitted Kydex version, both of which come with a small sharpening stone and flint striker for starting fires.
Loyal Blades is currently crowd-funding their TUSK on Kickstarter and has surpassed its target goal of $31,987 by almost $7,000 with a few weeks left to go. Those interested in getting their hands on one can pledge $156 or more on Loyal Blades Kickstarter page.
