5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM IDENTITY THEFT

October 7, 2015 by Taylor

Protecting your identity is SO SO important. Did you know that 66% of consumers who have had fraudulent charges were the first to notice them – not their financial institution? That’s pretty scary. I regularly check my accounts, but admittedly sometimes a week will go by where I don’t have time to check. A lot can happen in a week if someone gets a hold of your identity!

5 Ways To Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

As many of you know, besides being a blogger, I’m also a freelance writer and a social media manager. Because of that, I spend a good majority of my time on social media – but social media is one of the number one places to get your identity stolen! It seems the world is still getting adjusted to the fact that not everybody you meet online is who they say they are, and because of that, many people fall victim to identity theft. I want to discuss a couple ways to protect your identity because I want to help all of you avoid it! We are constantly making changes to the way we protect our information, and so far, I’ve yet to be a victim of identity theft – but I remain vigilant because I know it can happen to anyone.

1. Don’t share your personal information online.
Ever. Even if you’re sharing it with a trusted source or someone you know legitimately, it’s best to keep the information offline. Even if you share with somebody you can trust, if your account ever gets hacked, you’re at risk of giving that information to the wrong person. Often times, I’ve needed to share debit card information with my husband but we limit it to sharing over the phone and writing it down because the risk of sharing online is not worth it! This goes for passwords, financial information, and any other personal information that could be used to steal your identity (social security, address, etc.).

2. Buy a Wocket!
The Wocket is a smart wallet designed to help protect you from identity theft. The gist of it is that it’s a wallet with a single card that can be programmed with any of your actual cards. For instance, I have two debit cards that I regularly use (and also misplace) so I programmed them to my Wocket card that has my name on it. Now, I can leave my debit cards safely at home and feel safe and secure with the Wocket.

5 Ways To Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

I will say that I was really worried about the initial setup and how complicated it might be but I breezed right through it! It took me less than 10 minutes and it was easy enough that I could just watch the tutorial video on the Wocket website and figure it out completely on my own.

I was also worried about carrying such a small wallet versus the large one I usually carry, but I haven’t missed my big wallet much! Ultimately, if my information were to be compromised, I’d be losing a ton, especially being self employed so the peace of mind is much more important than being able to stuff 100 receipts in my wallet!

I highly recommend the Wocket if you live a lifestyle where you might be more prone to identity theft or if you own a business like I do! It’s extremely important to keep your information secure and the Wocket is one of the best ways I’ve seen to do so thus far!

3. Monitor your credit report.
Monitoring your credit report can *seem* like a waste of time, but honestly it isn’t. I know many people who have found things on their credit reports that didn’t match up leading them to find out they were a victim of identity theft. It’s always a good idea to keep eyes on your credit report, even if you’re young! Young people are some of the most highly targeted people for identity theft anyway, so keep yourself safe!

4. Destroy records and old statements.
Instead of just throwing these away, consider putting them through a paper shredder or burning them in a fireplace. They contain valuable information that can be used to gain access to your identity and financial information and you’d be surprised how much identity theft has been committed this way. It’s not as common as it used to be, but it’s certainly still important!

5. Guard your Social Security.
Don’t carry your card with you because if your wallet gets taken, that person will have a lot of access to your information and will easily be able to commit identity theft. Of course, I recommend the Wocket because it’s so simple anyway and you don’t need to carry all those cards with you anyway, but regardless of your wallet choice, keeping your SSN on you is never a good idea.

Have you ever been a victim of identity theft? What steps do you take/are you taking now to protect yourself?

Want to try a Wocket yourself? I think you should! keep that in mind for all your Christmas shopping needs this holiday – this would be a GREAT gift for the man who already has everything, but doesn’t want to lose it! Finding gifts for men is hard as it is, but the Wocket truly does it all!
