The Money 20/20 Hackathon, the largest fintech event of its type, features groups of developers in teams of 3-5 working together to solve some type of business issue using one of several featured APIs.
Teams decide which API they want to use. According to Kleinwaecter, many of the teams opted for a different API at the outset, the switched to the Worldpay API because it was easier to use.
“It was a big win for us,” said Kleinwaechter, who cited ease of use as the critical factor behind the popularity of the Worldpay API.
The winning team designed an app designed for restaurants featuring drive-through lanes. One of the major challenges with these businesses is recognizing when a patron who has already placed an order pulls out of the line, Kleinwaechter said. The API leveraged beacon technology to recognize when someone pulled out of line and for other drive-up window benefits.
Worldpay will hold its own hackathon in conjunction with Georgia Tech University Friday through Sunday at Georgia Tech’s Atlanta, Ga. campus. The event will feature $85,000 in prizes and will feature teams looking for apps allowing better access to companies and broader scoped sdks including fintech, POS, fraud, etc., according to Chester Ritchie, Worldpay senior vice president. The event will feature access to the incubator ecosystem of developers, VCs, and Georgia tech community. Teams retain any intellectual property that they develop during the event.
