(Before It's News)

As we all know, Google has most recently been referring to its upcoming software releases by the first letter of its name – this year’s being Android N, last year’s was Android M, and so on and so forth. While the official names of the software isn’t known till Google decides to make it common knowledge, these Android builds also carry an internal name, and they are often as interesting as the official names that we end up getting. As spotted in the AOSP repository, the name “nyc” is starting to pop up, obviously a reference to the development of Android N and an abbreviation of New York Cheesecake. But will the name Android New York Cheesecake be of any consequence?

As history tells us: No.

Just like Android K (Key Lime Pie), Android L (Lemon Meringue Pie) and Android M (Macadamia Nut Cookie), Google’s internal names for its software are about as inconsequential as eating one of these desserts (okay, I lie). Of course, one useful thing knowing Google’s internal name does is eliminate a potential option for what the official name will be, but there seems to be a distinct lack of desserts starting with the letter “N” – I’m going with “Android Nougatine” for now.
