Fiber optics technology has revolutionized Internet Broadband sector. With Fibre Optics, the ISPs are able to provide high-speed and consistent Internet connection to commercial and residential users. Till recently the cost of installing fiber cables used to be a major constraint for the ISPs to adopt this technology and to approach the residential users. Till recently, and even now, most of the ISPs depended on telephone cables to provide Internet Broadband connection which was fast enough for the home users. The number of residential users and their Internet usage has increased dramatically over the last few years with social media, e-Commerce and working from home getting more popular. Games and media users are another big residential user groups who need fast and consistent internet. With the residential users demanding more speed and consistent internet data, the ISPs are forced to adopt better technology to provide them better service. People who use the internet at home are now more aware of the emerging technologies and the competitive market. This has led to the wider use of fiber optic cables, which is more consistent as well as cost-effective for providing broadband services even to the home-users.

Difference between Cable and Fiber Internet

At present, ISPs provide home Internet Broadband via telephone cables which make having a landline or a cable TV connection mandatory for subscribing to Internet Broadband. Since people rarely use landlines these days and very few people get time to watch cable television, this unnecessary subscription lets them down considerably. Many people consider using an additional mobile exclusively with internet data connection instead. In such a case, they do not have to pay unnecessarily for landline or cable TV which they do not require. Moreover, they can use the extra phone to connect to the world on the go much cheaper also. What makes things worse for cable internet is that it is not very consistent. With fiber optic cables entering the market, the speed and consistency increases considerably which make a huge difference in the quality of service provided. It speeds up the basic residential requirements of social media, e-Commerce and entertainment while keeping the gamers and media users at home also happy. Though the higher price of fiber optic cables remained a major constraint to approach the residential users, the rates have come down considerably, which means a slight increase in charges, the residential users can now enjoy value added Internet Broadband services even without a landline or cable TV.

Advantages of Fiber optics enabled Internet for home users

Fiber optics remain cost-effective by eliminating the unnecessary and unused subscriptions and by providing very consistent and much faster internet connection. To add to the advantages, the fiber optics internet does not consider any infrastructural changes inside the house. Increased bandwidth that allows a higher amount of data to be passed over the connection is another big advantage, especially for media and work-at-home professionals. The cable can withstand high temperature, does not need electricity and can be immersed in water which makes it more desirable for residential users. Since it is not shared, the bandwidth and the speed remain consistent which further adds to the media and gaming experience which deals with large volumes of graphics data over the internet. Another important advantage is that your data is very secure while using Fiber optics as the data is not leaked outside cable via sharing. If you have already subscribed to cable internet, you can easily migrate to Fiber optics as there’re no internal changes required for migration. Only the outer cable has to be drawn will the outer socket where the continental draw has been drawn. This is done by the ISP and the inner telephone or tv cable itself connects to your computer.

Future of Fiber Optics in providing Internet Broadband

Citing these advantages, many ISPs are switching to fiber optics as they can provide many value-added services like a free landline, better media streaming and faster broadband without having to increase the subscription considerably. This has helped many new ISPs like BigPipe NZ to penetrate and establish in the market easily, especially the less considered residential market. Many ISPs are providing naked broadband and a cheaper internet to residential users by upgrading to fiber optics from the usual cables. As such the speed of Fiber optics enabled internet ranges from 10 Mbps to 10000 Mbps and in future it is expected to reach the Tbps range soon. High competition has forced the competent ISPs to adopt the latest technology and discard the obsolete ones which provide the users or subscribers with better quality of services. Due to fierce competition, they even have to compromise on the subscription rates fearing to lose to customers. Very soon, the entire cable network now being used for the Internet will become obsolete and a single fiber optics cable will provide the Internet broadband, cable tv network and the landline.
