Google’s April Fools’ Day gig went horribly wrong causing some Gmail users to insult contacts and some even claimed to have lost employment opportunities.
A feature called “Mic Drop” was added to Gmail today, but later removed after users found it doing something wrong and complained on social platforms and Google’s product forums. It was an orange button beside the standard “send” button that allowed uses send email with an animated image of a Minions character dropping a microphone.
Google celebrates the Aril Fools’ Day with various April Fools gags. In today’s attempt to inject humor into email through the new button equipped with GIF image the Big G wrote, “Today, Gmail is making it easier to have the last word on any email with Mic Drop. Simply reply to any email using the new ‘Send + Mic Drop’ button. Everyone will get your message, but that’s the last you’ll ever hear about it. Yes, even if folks try to respond, you won’t see it.”
One of the users, Andy Baio, former Kickstarter CTO and founder of XOXO Festival, said he had mistakenly hit the new button on one of his important emails that replaced the “Send+Archive” button and attached GIF image to the sent mail.
He tweeted that it was an strange experience for him as no one wanted to share sense of humor of the Gmail team. It is aslo incredible betrayal of trust to change the sent email in suchba way without confirmation.
