John P Grotzinger was project scientist for the Curiosity rover mission. He wrote the following article on ooids: “Numerical modeling of ooid size and the problem of Neoproterozoic giant ooids.” (displayed at
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11539432)
Dr. R.E. Summons is an expert on ooids. He wrote an article entitled “Lipid biomarkers in ooids from different locations and ages: Evidence for a common bacterial flora”. (see http://doi.org/10.1111/gbi.12047)
Dr. R.E. Summons is also on the Science Team of Mars rover Curiosity. He is the fifth author of the following article regarding discovering organic molecules in Yellowknife Bay, Gale Crater, Mars:

Dr. Jennifer Eigenbrode is a bio-geochemist on Curiosity rover science team. She talks about life on Mars in these videos: http://spaceref.com/mars/video-nasa-360-talks—life-on-mars.html
Of course there are many geologists on Curiosity rover’s science team. They should have no problem in recognizing ooids.
