UK based IT support and training company, Nexus, has released new information on the different types of IT training that is available. They are keen to highlight that not all training is created equally, nor is it suitable for everybody. In so doing, they hope to ensure people get the most out of training investment.

Investing in staff training is something every organization should be involved in. However, a significant issue that presents itself is how to make the training relevant. Additionally, different people have different learning styles, which means that various content delivery methods must also be found in order to see a return on investment. UK based IT support company Nexus has looked into the different forms of training that exist in an effort to empower organizations to find suitable training provision for their staff.

Firstly, Nexus recommends companies focus on the three approaches to training, which are:

  1. Self-paced learning is a preferred approach to training by many people, as it means that they don’t have to rush through their coursework. Unfortunately, most courses are not yet offered through self-study.
  2. Formal courses have the greatest degree of consistency. This means that there is a guarantee that someone who completes the course has also covered all of the curriculum.
  3. One to one training may at times be required. This is particularly true if hands on experience is required during the training. These are very practice courses and must be timed properly.

Next, it is important to understand the different delivery methods that are available. These include:

  1. Courses in classrooms, which are perfect for formal courses. A tutor teaches groups of 20 people or less for maximum effectiveness.
  2. Manuals and books, generally used in self-paced learning. These materials are portable and affordable.
  3. Computer-based training, which is now generally online. This enables students to monitor their learning process. It can be used in all three training approaches.
  4. Work experience, which is most suitable for the one to one training, being made available in the workplace itself.

Different students have different needs. It is important to recognize these needs. Nexus recommends that, as part of a new recruit’s induction process, employers perform not just a training need test, but also a learning style test. This will enable them to write strategies and create programs that offer the greatest value for money in as such that they will be the most beneficial for employees.

In terms of IT training, all three approaches to training can be delivered. Similarly, all four methods of training can be used as well. Nexus is happy to discuss a company’s specific needs in order to determine the best ways to ensure employees are able to access the training they need, in a way that is suitable to them.

A representative from Nexus says:

“We found that there is a significant lack of understanding about the different approaches to learning, and the different delivery methods as well. As a result, they often purchase packages that use a single approach and delivery method, and usually end up with a number of places available at the end of it, as well as a large amount of employees who feel they were not able to access the training they need.”

“It is important to see an employee as an investment,” he added, “which means investing in keeping their skills up to date as well. There are now so many solutions out there, particularly in terms of IT training, so there really is no more need for employees to go without.”
