Ahhh. There’s nothing quite like the aroma of genuine leather. And when it comes to wallets, leather is the crème de la crème! I can say with certainty that the folks over at Equus Leather believe this wholeheartedly. In a recent addition to their amazing behind the scenes video series, their master craftsmen Charlie shows off his handcrafting skills in the making of the Lloyd Coat Wallet.

“All of our wallets are handmade in our workshops in the UK and are made entirely with leather to ensure a long life without the wearing of fabric inners that commonly happens. Our hand stitching ensures seams don’t run when worn, and the finest leathers in the world mean a pocket companion that ages gracefully.”

Equus Design Vision – “A design on paper isn’t the end of the story though, and the complex shapes and construction had to be brought together into a single beautiful object, with each element adding to the form, as well as the function of the finished piece. The result is a traditional wallet, the largest in our Lloyd series, but sharing the same beautiful curves that run throughout.”

My take away after watching the video…The videography was exquisite! I enjoyed the close-ups. I could see the fine detail and felt like I was right there beside Charlie.

The blend of old-school tools (drafting board & graph paper) with some of the newer technologies such as the Electric Edge Creaser seems spot on for this product. Charlie worked with precision and with hand-to-eye control fitting for a master craftsman.

Care was taken at every step during the construction to reduce bulk via the hammers for compressing the leather, as well as, the Paring Knives that shaved away material along the edges. The Pricking Iron that was used to pre-punch holes for the hand-stitching was a neat revelation for me. Overall the video inspired and stirred up my desire to make something!
