The Matrix franchise looks set to return to movie theater screens, in the form of a remake of the much-loved original.
The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a reboot of what is regarded as a classic in both the sci-fi and action genres.
Trending on social media early this morning, the news has caused a lot of excitement among fans of the franchise, as well as significant consternation among those people who for some reason dislike Keanu Reeves.
Reeves, however, appears unlikely to be involved in a relaunch, The Hollywood Reporter suggests. Creed star Michael B. Jordan has been touted as a possible lead, but this is very much unconfirmed.
An untouchable icon?
According to The Verge, there will be plenty of other differences behind the scenes, too.
Matrix trilogy creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski are not currently on board, although their approval, if not their involvement, is said to be desirable to Warner Bros.
Original Matrix producer Joel Silver is believed to have been keen on the idea of a new Matrix movie, approaching the studio about it, but there are concerns regarding his relationship to the Wachowskis.
Silver was reported to have sold his interest in the Matrix movies for around $30 million back in 2012.
In terms of the writing, Zak Penn, who is known for script work on superhero movies including X-Men: The Last Stand, The Avengers, and Elektra, is being targeted to write a treatment.
Some elements within Warner Bros. are reported to be cautious about the idea of a reboot, believing The Matrix may have attained something of an untouchable status since it first blew audiences away in 1999. But let’s be honest, when has that ever stopped Hollywood before?
