Better Bee Honey @ Common Sense Homesteading

Honey is lovely all on its own, but sometimes it’s fun to add a little something extra. It’s been my pleasure to meet Jay Montgomery of Better Bee Honey, chat with him a bit, and sample some of his organically flavored honey.

Better Bee Honey is located in Sebewaing Michigan, which is up at the northern tip of the Michigan “thumb”.  Here’s a little information from their “About” page:

We here at Better Bee Honey have been beekeeping for 7 years.  We proudly do not force feed our honey bees with any type of fructose water and we do not treat our bees with any chemicals to fight disease.   We found that chemical treatments were mostly non effective and costly, not to mention harmful to all our health.

We specialize in Organically Flavored Honey. This means we infuse honey with USDA Certified Organic Flavor Extract. This flavored honey is a favorite among our customers.

Our honey is raw, pure, filtered only enough to remove hive debris, never cooked and awesome to eat!

Jay was generous enough to send me two sample bottles – blueberry flavored honey (above) and peach flavored honey (below).

Better Bee Peach Flavored Honey

The boys got a kick out of trying the different flavors.  They couldn’t decide which one they liked better.  As for me, I’m generally a honey purist, but I had fun sampling them, too.  I think the blueberry stands better on its own, while the peach is a better “go along” flavor in tea or coffee. Better Bee Honey also has Banana Cream, Chocolate Strawberry, Cinnamon, Irish Cream, Lavender, and Lemon flavors, or you can buy combination packs. (Visit their online shop to see what’s currently in stock.)

I think these honeys would make a lovely and unique gift, especially if you paired them up with some homemade bread and/or homemade jams and jellies in a gift basket, or did a combination of flavors together in a basket.

Better Bee Honey also has a wonderful array of honey recipes on their site at http://betterbeemktg.com/.  They also share recipes and tips on their Better Bee Honey Facebook page.

Win Better Bee Honey

Jay and his bees got hit with some of the big storms that rolled through  in late summer, which combined with our crazy weather to yield a late harvest, but now his honey store is fully stocked for the season.

To kick things off, he’s hosting a great giveaway that will run until November 15, 2012. The grand prize winner will receive:

One Blueberry
One Peach
One Lemon
One Cinnamon
One Lavender

The second and third place winners will each receive a bottle of blueberry flavored honey.  You can enter to win at “Win a Honey Package“.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek at Better Bee Honey, and will consider supporting them and other small business owners wherever you live, this holiday season and all year round.

P.S.  – Don’t forget to check out the post Honey as Medicine to learn about more uses for honey.
