The Sunday Survival Buzz – Volume 34
Welcome to this week’s Sunday Survival Buzz – a roundup of preparedness news, tips, articles and recommendations from around the web. But first, an update on my own preps.
By now you have most certainly figured out that I was traveling for the past few weeks. I took a much needed vacation coupled with some real work so all in all, I felt productive along the way. So just how does relate to prepping?
First of all, I was able to gather a ton of toiletries to use for barter purposes. Don’t laugh – other than the fact a few bottles of lotion and shampoo leaked in my suitcase, I made a real haul. My take is that I paid for these items with my room so they belonged to me. (I also hate to think that something a previous traveler had touched would remain in the room after he or she left. Yuck.)
Part of my trip included Central America and more specifically, Costa Rica. There I learned to make coffee totally off grid. This is something I will share once I gather up some green beans and a mill. To be honest, I hope to pick up a used meat grinder at the local thrift store for pennies on the dollar but if not, there is always Amazon.
One thing I loved about Costa Rica is the food. Beans and rice are the mainstay foods and I was able to dine on some delicious renditions of local favorites. You can bet that I will try some of these uniquely flavored dishes once I have a chance to get the right spices and condiments.
Probably the most important thing I did during my travels had to do with spreading the word about survival and prepping. I bent the ear of a lot of people with my message and hopefully one or two or ten actually listened.
So all and all, I had a grand time. I apologize for not responding to very many comments while gone but I had only marginal internet access for most of the time. It is good to be home.
But enough about me. Let’s get on to the Sunday Survival Buzz.

Secret Cold War Tests Raise Concerns: Sadly, I suspect that governments (and not just in the USA) are still using the poor and impoverished as test subjects. This is just one more example of the crimes against humanity (in my opinion, of course).
Cyber 9/11: A retiring congressional representative from Washington State is warning us that America is vulnerable to a cyber attack that could shut down power grids, freeze money supplies, cripple transportation systems and imperil nuclear plants. He further states that the nation needs more protections against a rogue attack on computer systems that could amount to a “cyber 9/11″ or “electronic Pearl Harbor.” I think my friend George Ure is right on track with his recent book, Broken Web.
Prepper Loneliness: This article from the Berkey Guy Blog puts to paper the thoughts of so many of us.
5 Things Your Should Know About Arsenic: I am not going to panic over the Consumer Reports report on arsenic in rice. I did a wee bit of research since returning home and it appears that solid reports and studies of arsenic in rice have been around since 2007 and quite possibly before that as well. (Refer to Food Safety: U.S. Rice Serves Up Arsenic.)
I can not help but think that CU has sold out to the FDA who is charged with creating panic among preppers. Okay, that is a bit rash but still, make me wonder.

A few weeks ago I announced the launch of the upcoming Preparedness Review. Included was a quote from the editor, Todd Sepulveda. For all of you eagle eyes out there, his quote indicated an launch date that was long past. Okay already. Todd made a mistake and I did not catch it until later, after the piece was posted and fixed it at that time.
Let me get to the point.
Unlike some bloggers, I work full time in a fairly stressful career. That said, the Backdoor Survival site is 100% free and I do not ask or beg for donations. Backdoor Survival is something I do from the heart because I feel the message of survival and preparedness is important. I try to be honest and fair with my readers but I am also human. I work on the site most nights for three hours and do this almost seven days a week.
Bottom line? I am human and I get tired. So if I miss a typo – or a word spelled correctly but used out of context because the spell checker let it go – I am sorry. Get over it or move on. ‘Nuff said.

Update on the New Five Flags
Having been to Costa Rica, I must say that I appreciate Johnny Mueller’s wisdom in The New Five Flags even more. I realize that this sounds like an out and out pitch to get you to buy something but in this case, I have to say this MP3 series is really worth it. If I were 20 years younger, I would definitely avail myself of the opportunity to live the good life as a part-time ex-pat in Central America. As I said before, I find the series fascinating.
The Final Word
Something I did not mention earlier was how well armed and “awake” my fellow travelers were. I met people from all over the US and most were quite ordinary folks doing the best they can muster in today’s uncertain economy. Most were my age and most felt they would not see an economic recovery anytime some. We talked of the potential for collapse and of revolution. Their biggest concern? Our government is allowing us to continue to own firearms but buying up all the ammo and spare magazines so that they are rendered useless.
These are sobering times.
