(Before It's News)

This guest post by P. Cobb  and entry in our non-fiction writing contest.

My husband and I are right on the verge of retirement. Unfortunately we live in Alaska, which is not a kind state for senior citizens, and is not a state you want to be living in should there be an economic collapse. Alaska is completely dependent upon the lower 48 states for their survival. All goods are shipped via barge, air, or over the Alcan Highway. While there are farms in the area outside of Anchorage, there are no significant dairies, no grain fields, no cattle being raised. So should all transportation be curtailed, Alaska would suffer greatly. In addition, a majority of the residents are either military, government employees, or work for a dwindling oil industry, all sections of our economy that would bear the brunt of an economic collapse.

I noticed during my last food prep stock-up that prices were being to rise significantly. We have already been hit with an increase in fuel costs and our wages are stagnant. My job with a General Contractor has been cut to ten hours a week because of no construction work available. My husband runs the Blockbuster franchise. Talk about a dead industry!

So we can see the writing on the wall. We are looking at a bleak future..IF WE ALLOW IT!

We have jumped into action. Our condo and house are up for sale. We estimate we have until fall before the low information people wake up and see what is coming their way. We are increasing our food preps even though we know we will have to haul them along with us to our new location which will be in Idaho.

Why Idaho? Well, I can’t do a hot climate very well and I certainly can’t do large cities. Idaho just seems to fit our prepper lifestyle. We plan on gardening heavily when we get there and to that end have researched all the information we can through the University of Idaho Horticulture School and are stocking up on seeds that would work in the Idaho climate. In addition we are learning about herbal remedies and such so that we can create an herbal garden. We are also increasing our reloading supplies in anticipation of being able to sell ammunition should we need extra income.

We have paid off our debts and while we are facing an uncertain future in retirement due to the likelihood of social security collapsing and our work pensions being curtailed, we feel confident that we have made as many positive steps to alleviate those events. We can still work and intend to do so even if it means you will see us at the front door of Walmart welcoming you to the store!

So the prepper lifestyle can help cushion the blow of an uncertain retirement. As you learn to become more self sufficient you won’t be facing the uncertain future that many of our senior citizens are dreading. Examine your life, plan for the future, and be prepared to jump if it looks like where you are at will be an impossible situation in your elder years.
